Thanks to GiveAwayOfTheDay, I am using AltDesk from www.astonshell.com.  Works quite fine, no major bug encountered so far.

Carol recommended DM2 to me before but I couldnt even find a helpfile for it (it could be me !?)

The "help files" in DM2 thumbs up are called Overview, Settings + Support > Installation
- and are online only: http://dm2.sourceforge.net/overview.html
http://dm2.sourceforge.net/settings.html
http://dm2.sourceforge.net/install.html

I'd like to take the opportunity to rave about a little-known virtual desktop program, Enable Virtual Desktop. It's not free, but it's only $20, and it has better features and usability than any other I've seen. It supports dual monitors, wallpapers, keyboard bindings, wallpapers, systray icons or not, and a "mini-window" of all your desks in which you can move windows from desk to desk. I really love it.

Can any of virtual desktops save opened apps as a session to be restored later?

Not EVD, no... It does however have "window rules" by which you can specify which virtual desk an application opens up in, etc.

Thanks MKairys, but that would not be what I need.

Wow, I have been looking for this for quite some time.  I have looked at Dexpot many times as that is the closest to what I am looking for that most people recommend, yet (and I can't say exactly why), it never seems to work out for me.  I have tried most that were talked about here, but the two pay ones mentioned, EVD and GoScreen are new to me.  I must check them out now Thmbsup

What I am looking for is like Mouser said - what is in Linux (though my experience is from much later that the cli mouser spoke of).  Gnome desktop has an extrodinary virtual desktop.  I am looking for the same experience.  GoScreen and EVD appear to offer that.  Thans for bringing this up again...

I haven't tried it, so I cannot recommend it, but it looks like fun, and it is freeware. I have no idea if it also is useful, but I guess it is supposed to be just that: 360desktop public beta from http://www.360desktop.com/

A few DC'ers were not impressed with 360desktop. See http://www.donationcoder....12305.msg120174#msg120174

- I am a little surprised to read how harsh they spoke about 360desktop. I mean, one would think a coder's forum would give a first public beta version a longer line, but they said they tested for less than a minute! I didn't download it myself yesterday, because I couldn't see the point in the very concept, but now I will have to, I must, test and see if it really performs that bad...  cheesy

- I didn't make it very far, though. At the very beginning of installation, before any window had yet appeared, my Firewall (Outpost Pro) asked if I would allow the installation to change my registry! I clicked No, and aborted the procedure. How can it write to registry before asking IF or WHERE I would like to install? Now I understand why some were speaking harshly of this: they were offended, like I am! I won't try it out, either, but of course I too am then unable to speak about it's performance...

Curt: looks like it's part of the WISE installation system - and my guess is that it writes to the "Run" key, in order to be able to clean up temporary files after a windows reboot. Perhaps not the smartest way of handling things, but the company to blame would be the WISE guys (huhu), not the 360desktop people.

That's my guess, anyway.

I just tried 360desktop out and there is nothing wrong with it except that it doesn't move my windows like it's supposed to. Sad
