If you didn't already know it, there is an irc channel for donationcoder: Network: Efnet Channel: #donationcoder If you are new to irc, try http://www.mirc.com for a good client. We have now added the ability to join the channel and chat right from the forum(!) using a java-based system which is quite good. Just click the chat button at the top of the forum (or click here) to join and start chatting right away [thanks to Dan The Man , the PJIRC team, and simplemachines forum for this feature]

Don't know how to fix this.
Chat worked for me (as you know) the other evening but now when I try to cnnect it says 127.0.0.1 (banned) and disconnects.
I know that is my 'localhost' IP and not relevant.
How do I get the Java chat client to use my Internet IP ?
I clicked on help but couldn't find any reference to this error.
I am using an 802.11g network with an access point.
The only difference between connecting today and when we chatted is that a second computer is connected to the network ???

ok it looks like maybe the server is having a hard time getting through to you. it could be because you are on a network and the router is not forwarding the information to the proper compuer - something that happens when connecting via routers. but i can try configuring a different server so we can see if that's it. if not, it may be that you will need to configure your router in order to use services like irc, ftpserver, instand messaging, etc.
the settings for routers that need to be set up to support such stuff on network routers is commonly called "port forwarding". someone here probably understands it better than me but i can try to find some good web pages if you want.

It is just strange that it worked fine the other evening?
I was using the same computer, with the same router connection to the internet ...

I'd just like to quickly recommend HydraIRC, a free and open source IRC client that I feel is largely comparable to mIRC (and the free part is nice ). I hope I'll get time to check out the IRC channel more thoroughly in the future. I signed up to DC a month or two ago and am just now getting time to explore! - Oshyan

I'm happy with the development of the IRC channel. When I joined DC there were mostly only 10 people online, now the average has at least doubled, I saw already up to 25 people in there!

Behold! The Zealot Speaketh unto TheeSo it's about time I mentioned XChat. This multiplatform irc client is free (yes even the windows version is free!), and supports many scripting languages: last time I counted it was seven but it seems guile has been added, so that makes eight supported scripting languages! Mirc-Scripts are not supported at all, but you can choose from perl, python, javascript, tcl, ruby, lisp, guile, and C. IMNow, if you want to "do instant messaging" as well, there is bitlbee which works with every irc client. It functions as a gateway between irc and IM. Bitlbee has been working reliably for over four years here. -ismIf you want a little minimalism I believe xchat+bitlbee make a very good combination: bitlbee has no gui at all; xchat's interface can be reduced to the bare chat necessities. I have attached an example screenshot of how it could look. On the other hand, if you prefer all sorts of gui widgets and stuff, xchat can do that as well; I don't have a screenshot as proof though...

I hope to see some new faces... er, names... in the channel!
BTW, my client is always connected, so if it seems like I'm ignoring you, I'm probably away from my computer.

Truth be told, I have switched to irssi in order to achieve my mouse-less desktop environment. It runs off the shell account my club provides its members, which makes dealing with bots a little easier. Still, XChat is a good program and I miss some of its features: scripting in python for example...
