Hi everyone,

I was curious if anyone else here has used MirrorFolder from TechSoft:

I found a recommendation to it on some web site somewhere a while back, and downloaded the trial version and have used it a bit, but haven't really exercised it, nor have I put it up against the programs shown in the backup guide reviews.

I would love if someone would do that kind of hard work for me and write up what they think the differences are, pro and con. I suspect it would be most easily compared to GenieSoft's program. One thing I *do* like about MirrorFolder is the fact that it just fades into the background as an Explorer extension.

hopefully someone with some experience in real-time mirroring programs will post a more knowledgable reply,
but you've pointed out a kind of program that maybe i should have addressed in the backup guide, and maybe i should ammend the backup guide to mention.

personally i don't use a mirroring app like this only because i am reluctant to have programs running in the background that i think could consume meaningul amounts of the cpu.

but on the other hand such a tool seems like it could be undeniably useful especially for people who put a premium on not letting any amount of time go by without having important working files backed up, and who are not as concerned with the minor hit in performance.

what's nice about these programs is that as you say, you just set it and forget it..  maybe someone here can explore this topic and it might make for a good follow up guide to backups; there is always more to say about backups and maybe a part2 would be a good idea in a month.

i like the screenshots of mirrorfolder which shows it supporting some archiving function - that seems like it would be very useful..

I used to use AutoSave from http://www.v-com.com which keeps versioned backups of files as you save them.

It seemed to work well and saved my bacon on more than one occasion, but like you I got a little fed up with have the disc chuntering i the background periodically.

If you need this sort of backup though it is worth looking at, and it isn't expensive.

I would most likely use XXCopy, the "boldly extended XCOPY"

set up in a batch file run from a "CRON"-type scheduler (I never tried the Windows scheduler).  The cron I use is OTTO, short for "ottomate" <groan> from
Eric Taucke's software:

there's also nnCron.

some fold would think of SyncBack from 2BrightSparks but that's a back-up which isn't quite the same as a mirror.

Nice to hear from other cron tools,
but i like to mention...

...the best (+free) W32 cron tool i have found is Cron from Kalab:

- it support the hole unix cron syntax
e.g.
35 18 * * 1-5 xcopy "c:\My Documents\*.*" k:\backup /y /s

instead of
35 18 * * Mon xcopy "c:\My Documents\*.*" k:\backup /y /s
... Tue Wed Thu...
35 18 * * Fry xcopy "c:\My Documents\*.*" k:\backup /y /s
like OTTO


- and could be run as service too.
